Gilpin field sports a new look for Sanford game
By Patty Unruh
Gilpin High School’s head football coach, Craig Ball, relates that the team was geared up for the first game of the season. The team battled against Sanford this past Saturday, August 23, at 2 p.m. on Gilpin’s home field and was eager for the community to come out and watch the contest. Though the outcome was less than hoped for this time, they’re looking forward to the next game.
Coach Ball stated that much work was needed to prepare the field. Gilpin County’s road crew worked on road and grading work on the field and parking lot.
The home side stands were also repositioned, requiring moving a lot of rock and dirt.
“Corrie Webb and Black Diamond Excavating really came through for the football program,” Ball praised. “They brought in a large tracked earthmover up on the field and did a great job of carving out the necessary rock to allow for the improved placement.” The stands needed to be moved for safety reasons and to allow for new home sideline benches. Webb used his equipment and expertise to move and reposition the concessions building, which Ball said was in desperate need because wet weather had caused its foundations to sink over the past couple of years.
Ball further noted, “Stan at Taggert’s convenience store donated field painting attachments, to be used on the field when painting with the field striper.”
The coach was grateful for all the community support being given the team this year. He called attention to Gilpin’s five home games coming up, including a big game versus Nederland on September 27 at 1 p.m.
The other Gilpin home games, besides those with Sanford and Nederland, are: Pikes Peak Christian on September 6 at 1 p.m.; West Grand on September 13 at 1 pm.; and Justice on October 18 at 1 p.m.
We hope to see you all at the game – where else can you get front row seats!
