The Gilpin County boy’s basketball team fired up their fast break and their pressing defense to upset favored Longmont Christian 44-34 in a non-conference game at the home gym last Friday. The win brought their 5-game losing streak from January to a halt and raised their season record to 6-9. The importance of the game was that prospective league member Longmont Christian has been seeded 6th in the upcoming 5280 League Tournament later this month. Gilpin County currently holds last place in the 5280 League with three league games left to go. The Eagles were not winless in January, as reported in last week’s article. They defeated South Park 53-48 at home on January 10.

The Eagles jumped on the Warriors right away. Spearheaded by Matt Immordino’s layups, Gilpin jumped off to a 10-0 lead and then, essentially, traded points with Longmont Christian the rest of the way. However, the win was not that easy. Cameron Jauregui, the Warriors’ scoring leader warmed up as the Eagles cooled off and Longmont Christian led at halftime 16-15.  After an inspiring speech by Coach Paul Hanson at half time, the Eagles re-awakened their pressing defense, and Chase Boulter’s jump shot came alive after a couple of games of quietude. Boulter scored all of his 10 points from the field in the final half to provide the margin of victory.

Immordino sank 13 points to lead the Eagles’ scoring while Boulter and Bjorn Tomlinson each had 11. Against a team that was physically more like them, the Eagles controlled the boards with 45 rebounds, including 15 offensive grabs. The Eagles hope this performance is a harbinger of better things when they face league foes Rocky Mountain Christian and Community Christian at home Tuesday and Friday.
