Eagles host Caliche on Friday night
By David MacKenzie
Friday, August 24, at 7 p.m. marks the season kick-off as the varsity football Eagles host Caliche. The contest marks the Eagles first game on the new artificial turf sports field.
When completed, the new all-weather six lane track, in addition to GCSD sports team use, will be open to the public to walk, jog, and run, as well as for use by students in grades preschool through 12 for physical education class.
As final steps for the installation of the rubberized track surface are in preparation, all fans are asked to stay off the current track surface during football games. Please stay behind the fence line. The track and field area access is for team members only. The fence will not be completely installed until the track is finished. Thanks to our fans for their cooperation!
The new field lights will be on Friday night. The field lights will be on four times during the football season. There are four Friday night varsity football games. One game is tomorrow, and one is in September. There are two games in October. The lights will be turned off around 9:30 p.m.
Preparation and planning for the stadium project began in 2015. Initial excavation for the new track and upgraded sports field was completed in July 2017. Construction began in April 2018 for the addition of the track and artificial turf sports field. The third phase of the stadium improvement includes bleachers with a target construction date of summer 2019.
The new facility will be dedicated to the community at the Homecoming Varsity Football game on October 12.
