Thanks to those who sacrificed so much so that we can live free
By Esmee Halsted
As always Gilpin School honored the annual Veterans Day celebrations. This celebration is organized every year by our very own Sue Henry. Ms. Henry and select students find guest speakers, invite retired and active duty vets, and encourage family members to speak on behalf of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
To show our appreciation, 5th grade students sang “Fifty Nifty United States,” a Gilpin school tradition, led by music teacher Misty Ebers. High school and Middle school band and choir played “Thankyou Soldiers” and, something to pump everyone up, “All Star” from Shrek. The Cheerleaders read poems “Tell Their Stories” and “How Do You Measure A Soldier’s Sacrifice” both by Kelly Roper which truly expressed the importance of Veterans Day.
But more so, personal stories from the veterans left everyone feeling warm inside. Two active duty vets, Staff Sergeant Harlen Ruiz and First Sergeant Tony Etheridge, shared what Veterans Day means to them. The main presenter, First Sergeant Tony Etheridge, went a little deeper into Veterans Day. “So the last thing I’m gonna talk on… is what it actually means being soldier.” After joining at 17, he did not realize the true meaning behind serving in the military, but after a talk with a superior officer his entire view changed.” That’s not a legacy, it’s actually how you make people feel… so that’s what mean to sacrifice, giving and not taking anything in return.” He is a ROTC coach at Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver. Some of his students performed the presentation and retiring of colors which is a patriotic flag ceremony. Our community is blessed to have seen their performance.
The veteran honorees retired to the atrium for refreshments and appetizers. Thank you to all of our veterans! “On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free.” —Dan Lipinski
