For fresh local food
by Dave Gibson
On every second Sunday of the month, a farmers market is held at the Jeff Guercio Memorial Ball Field in Nederland next to Barker Reservoir. Take advantage of this convenient opportunity to stock up on delicious Colorado-grown fresh fruits and vegetables, honey, eggs, pickles, jams, and homemade baked goods. Amusements for the kids and a live band complete the scene, while there are many options for quenching your thirst with a refreshing natural drink.
Nederland Farmers Market board member Melody Baumhover relates that, “Up here amidst nature, we aim for sustainability, but finding locally-sourced food is a major difficulty. In order to combat our seemingly lack of local food, we have started a farmers market in conjunction with other local gardening projects to provide healthy local food to Nederland and the surrounding mountain community. Though it is currently a small market, we know it will “grow!”
Already growing, Board President and Market Manager Camille Thorson promises a cider press in September and a pumpkin patch in October.
