Gilpin County Youth and High School Tournaments
By Jeff Warner
The snowstorm of Friday night, December 16, put a stop to many people’s plans, but it was no match for the Gilpin County Youth Wrestlers. The club hosted its second major meet of the season, the Metro Junior Wrestling League tournament, at Gilpin County High School. Several wrestlers posted outstanding results.
Meanwhile, at the high school level, Josh Trujillo finished second and Mike Wenholz third at the highly competitive 13th Annual Sheridan Tournament.
At the junior league tournament, Benjamin Gebhart, Ryan Hanssen, and Seamus Cannon led the way with first-place finishes in their divisions. In spite of the snow, eight teams and nearly 100 wrestlers competed.
Gebhart won the U10 105-111 class by pinning teammate Brennan Lautrup. Coach Pete Morgan called Gebhart one of the most difficult wrestlers to beat in the league, but he also praised Lautrup for his effort against his much more experienced teammate.
Hanssen topped the U10 76-80 division, again clinching victory by defeating a Gilpin teammate. Mason Sechler finished second after Hanssen pinned him at the 2:47 mark of their match.
In one of the most exciting matches of the day, Cannon won his U6 35-39 division with an action-packed 21-16 decision over Pomona’s Charlie Perea. The match was even until the final seconds, when Cannon scored a two-point reversal to take the lead for good.
Dusty Lebeau and Joey Morgan finished second in their respective divisions for the Eagles. Lebeau, U12 67-74, lost by medical forfeit to Jonathon LeBlanc of Adams City after injuring his back. In U12 76-80, Morgan won an early 2-0 decision over Miguelito Salazar of Adams City, then pinned teammate Brandon Robinson in their final match of the day. Robinson earned third in that division.
Toby Scott earned a third-place finish (U8 56-60) with a dominant match against Elijah Maize of Pomona, ending in a pin at 2:23.
Other Gilpin County Youth wrestlers who finished third in their divisions were:
William Siegrist (U12 140-144)
Davyn Meade (U10 79-84)
Jett Hanssen (U8 59-64)
Elijah Warner (U8 50-53)
At the Sheridan high school tournament, wrestlers from 13 teams competed. Trujillo and Wenholz recorded strong results to earn podium finishes.
Trujillo, in the 145-pound category, pinned three of his first four opponents before losing by fall to Ty Addison of Florence, who is undefeated at this weight this season.
Wenholz scored two pins and a technical decision on the way to his third-place finish at 113 pounds. His two losses were to wrestlers who, between them, only had one loss entering this tournament.
