Battle against South Park

Gilpin County High School girls’ varsity basketball team came close to pulling off a win against the South Park (Fairplay) Burros in a home non-conference game on January 10. The Lady Eagles were upset 36-35, as their opponents edged ahead of a narrow Gilpin lead at the last moment to win. Gilpin is 1-6 for the season, 0-3 at home.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game, both teams playing with determination. Gilpin led at the end of the first quarter 7-6, and at the end of the second quarter the score was tied 19-19. Gilpin held onto a narrow lead at the end of the third period, 39-26. During the fourth period, the action heated up still more as the lead went back and forth. It looked to the screaming fans as though the Lady Eagles might have the victory, but South Park pulled ahead in just the last couple of minutes to beat their hosts by one point.

Although suffering a loss, the Gilpin team could be proud of their performance. Leading the Lady Eagles was Delainey Lepro with 9 points. Teammates Alyssa Chareunsouk contributed 8, Cicely Lepro 7, Khristine Barr 6, and Stephanie Siegrist 5.

Chareunsouk swished a three-point field goal, and two-pointers were made by Chareunsouk (1), Barr (3), C. Lepro (3), D. Lepro (3), and Siegrist (2).

  1. Lepro and Chareunsouk each netted 3 field goals, and C. Lepro and Siegrist made 1 apiece.

Top scorer for the Burros was Madison Gould with 14 points. South Park’s season record is 5-5.

The girls’ junior varsity team won their game 19-16.

Match with University

The Lady Eagles’ varsity suffered a 38-32 loss in a fiercely contested home non-conference match with the University Bulldogs from Greeley on January 6.

The Bulldogs took an early lead and ended the half at 20-13. Gilpin came back for the third quarter ready to battle, though, and the score was 29-27 going into the fourth quarter, when the Lady Eagles’ determined effort brought the score to a 29-29 tie. However, the Bulldogs pulled ahead with several free throws to nip Gilpin 38-32.

Tops in scoring for the Eagles was D. Lepro with 13 points.

Three-pointers were dunked by Barr, C. Lepro, and D. Lepro. Two-point field goals were achieved by D. Lepro with 5, Berkley Davis with 2, and C. Lepro, Siegrist, and Daria Simon with 1 each.

Chareunsouk contributed 2 free throws.

28 total rebounds were grabbed for Gilpin, including 10 offensive (Siegrist leading with 3) and 18 defensive (Barr, D. Lepro, and Siegrist leading with 4 each).

  1. Lepro, Chareunsouk, and Davis had 3 assists each.

Leaders in stealing were Chareunsouk and Siegrist with 2 each. Barr, Julia Blohm, C. Lepro, D. Lepro, and Davis each had 1 steal.

Siegrist successfully blocked the ball twice and D. Lepro once.

No statistics were available for University; their record is 1-7.

It was University over the Gilpin junior varsity 31-10.
