Central City’s Great Pumpkin Patch

By Barbara Thielemann

Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin Patch entered Central City’s “Big-T” parking lot with the big winds. Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, volunteers from the Central City Fire Department Foundation and Main Street Central City met the October winds with gusto. Customers galore, wrapped in winter gear, filled ‘little red’ wagons with pumpkins of various sizes. The little ones quickly chose the littlest pumpkins.

Lino Barela of Nederland brought three of her ‘Jumpers’ bouncy castles to entertain the young ones, though we did see a few parents join in. It was difficult to keep all three of the castles up at one time, but the children didn’t mind and laughter filled the lot.

Hot chocolate, hot tea, coffee, and apple cider warmed the souls that ventured on the cold and blustery day was provided by the Fire Department. Hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, brats, chips, and muffins were served by Joe and Kara Tunnici. Handmade caramel apples and a cauldron of candy were there for the choosing.

LaNora Braning and Deb Wightman planned and prepared this ‘first’ Halloween Pumpkin Patch for Main Street Central City, a Commission of the City and part of DOLA’s Colorado Main Street Program and the National Historic Trust. The Mission of Main Street Central City is: A volunteer effort by citizens, businesses, organizations and government to revitalize Main Street Central City, Colorado by diversifying and expanding businesses and cultural opportunities while maintaining its historic integrity and value. Participants were pleased to have a ‘patch’ so close and urged Main Street Central City to come again in 2018.
