At the 72nd Annual GCAA Juried Show
By David Josselyn
The Gilpin County Arts Association hosted the opening ceremony for their annual juried show on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at historic Washington Hall. A juried show is a prize-based event in which artists submit up to three of their favorite recent pieces and jurors select from those submissions the pieces they believe are entitled to be included. The selected pieces are then ranked by an independent judge for prizes in each category; and one special piece is selected from all of them to be Best in Show. All pieces in the juried show will remain hanging in Washington Hall until either sold or August 11, whichever comes first. The longest continuous running juried show in Colorado is known for top-notch works by artists from across the state and this year is no exception. The professional artistry on display is only trumped by the historic charisma of Washington Hall. If that does not convince you, perhaps the words of the artists might entice you to visit and see the marvelous works in person.
Blue-ribbon artist Laine Greaves-Smith remarked about Washington Hall, “The building is just beautiful; an incredible space.” His opinion on the artwork mirrored that of the building, “The work here is beautiful world-class art!”
Award-winning Renee Peterson, an artist in the show and member of the Arvada Fine Arts Guild, exclaimed, “They have so much talent!” referring to the artists represented. She found inspiration in Washington Hall saying it is, “A fabulous setting; the history and piece of Colorado.”
Veteran artist and highly-esteemed local artist Virginia Unseld remarked about the work represented, “It’s very professional.” She similarly commented about Washington Hall, “The gallery looks professional; there is space to enjoy each piece on its own.”
Acclaimed jeweler Eileen LeLand commented, “The jewelry is incredible; I feel lucky to be included!”
GCAA President Eric Miller has done an incredible job with the association and he is “Truly honored by the participation and enthusiasm of the artists and the community.” Miller said there were hundreds of hours in many weeks of preparation; not only with organizing the show, but also cleaning up the gallery, removing clutter, updating the lighting, and throwing on a fresh coat of paint. Looking to the future, he commented, “I can’t wait to be here for the 100th” Juried Show.
The show will be on display through August 11th, but as pieces are sold, they will be switched out by other works of the same artist, so if you want to catch the ambience of the original show, be sure to stop by soon!
GCAA President Miller donated his own money for a first-time prize category of the President’s Award. He says since the show is judged independently, the favorites of the judges do not always align with his own and so he wanted to choose his own favorite piece. This year, the President’s Award was given to Stefan Begej for Exuberance #19.
